Director: Jamarr Woodruff
Circus Director, Jamarr Woodruff, was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Ever since his senior year of high school, when Jamarr saw a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College audition poster on his guidance counselors' door, he knew he was meant to be a clown. After the audition Jamarr was not accepted to RBBBC Clown College so he decided to continue his education at Alabama State University. Seen juggling all over campus, Jamarr soon earned the name Juggleman.
He honed in on his performing skills by partaking in many plays on campus. He worked his way from performing in the plays, to assistant directing and then directing main stage productions. In his free time, Jamarr would juggle at ASU Basketball games during time outs and offered entertainment to the large crowds.
After graduating from ASU, RBBBC Clown College was no longer open so Jamarr studied at the Clown Conservatory at the San Francisco Circus Center. Learning in depth the art of clowning from professionals like Peggy Ford (Ringling Bros.), Dominique Jando (Big Apple Circus), Weng Xiao (Nanjing Acrobatics Troupe), and Jeff Razz (Pickle Family Circus, Cirque Du Soliel). Jamarr again auditioned for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and was hired in November 2005, becoming the 18th African American Clown in their 136-year history of the show.
Jamarr has traveled all over the US bringing his clowning experience as 'JMan' on local and national television shows like Good Morning America and Fox and Friends. He has also been featured in print and on the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus Nintendo Wii video game.
In 2009, Jamarr became the Artistic Director of the Prescott Circus Theater, a non-profit afterschool program that teaches circus skills to youth in Oakland, CA. In 2012, he joined The Big Apple Circus Clown Care Team in Atlanta, bringing the joy of classical circus to hospitalized children at 16 of the leading pediatric facilities across the United States. He is also working on his inspirational book that uses clown pedagogy and clown logic to enlighten people on how to live a happier and more fulfilled life; entitled "Wise Words from a Fool: Life Lessons from a Clown Perspective".
Jamarr is excited to bring his expertise and many years of clowning and performing experience to our Circus Arts Camp again this summer. Campers will be able to embrace the art of performing and building confidence by expressing themselves through Circus Arts. Campers will learn to juggle, hang from silks, clowning, and so much more here at Future Stars!
