2024 STEAM Programs – Future Stars Selden

Future Stars Computer Science Programs:

Minecraft & Roblox Developers

(Ages 6-14) 4 Weekly Sessions: Jul.1-5*, Jul.15-19, Jul. 29-Aug.2, & Aug.12-16 (NO CAMP THURSDA YJULY 4th)

• These days, the mainstream world has realized the potential of Minecraft as a tool to inspire a new generation of computer scientists, programmers, and engineers in a world where demand for these fields is growing, and as such many educational aides relating to the game have been developed. LearnToMod’s block-based visual programming language (similar to MIT’s AppInventor) will be used to teach basic programming concepts, such as variables, functions, loops, conditionals, boolean logic, and more through creating modifications to the games Minecraft & Roblox. Students will be able to see the effects of the code they wrote in game, giving them visual feedback to help them learn.

Future Stars Robotics Programs:

(Ages 6-14) 2 Weekly Sessions: Jul. 8-12 & Aug. 5-9

Our Robotics program covers everything from robotics learning primer, to robotics engineering challenges, and then into Recreational Sports. This is an ideal camp for children looking to exercise their mind to learn science & technology via robotics in the morning and balance their day of fun with sports activities in the afternoon. From building LEGO machines to LEGO robots, campers begin each day with a Robotics primer learning workshop and then immerse into theme based robotics engineering project challenges.  Programs will take place in collegiate classrooms and/or computer labs with all necessary equipment provided.

Carol Wilson

Carol Wilson is a distinguished educator of nearly thirty years. She has performed a variety of roles in the East Islip School District as a teacher of 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade. Most recently, Carol helped the East Islip School District to pioneer their S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) program, where she teaches students in grades 3-5 to create, design, and communicate in teams to solve everyday problems.

Carol holds an M.A. in Reading and Special Education from Dowling College, as well as a B.A. in Elementary Education and Spanish from Clemson University. She also holds an SBL degree in administration and is currently a supervisor of student teachers at St. Joseph’s University in Patchogue.

Carol was the head varsity volleyball coach at East Islip between 1994-2001, leading the Redmen to multiple Section XI playoff appearances, with teams consisting of athletes who would go on to compete at the college level in NCAA Division I and III. She was also selected in 2012 as the faculty recipient of the National Blue Ribbon Award for Timber Point Elementary School.

Carol’s mission as an educator is to inspire her students each and every day to innovate and develop solutions to the challenges we face on a daily basis. To that end, Carol can’t wait to work with and have fun with our future scientists, engineers, coders and detectives this summer!

In her time away from school, Carol enjoys hiking, gardening, and spending time with her two sons.

Who are your staff members?
Our staff comprises coaches, teachers, instructors and collegiate-student athletes who share a passion for working with children and have experience and know-how in their respective fields.

What are the ratios?
Typically, between 8-10:1. Exceptions are Tennis (6:1 on-court) and Rising Stars (5:1)

What happens during inclement weather?
Camp still runs as planned. If possible, we prefer to have our programs continue with their normal programming.  However, if and when inclement weather mandates we go indoors, we have ample indoor space to utilize at main campus.  Occasionally, the multi-sport program will take off-site trips on rainy days, such as bowling, air-trampoline, etc.

What happens on really hot days?
Our experienced coaching staff will take additional water/shade breaks throughout the day.  There are shaded areas and tents around the athletic fields where groups can rest between activities.  Campers are able to cool-off by our misting fans or even take a quick run through the sprinklers that we turn on. Water Park time would also be extended for that day, not to mention access to air-conditioned indoor space.

What do I send to camp?
Please follow this link for

Can I add sessions during the summer?
Yes. You can add sessions anytime, prior to the week you’re looking to enroll, pending availability. The price will be at our current 1-week rate and will not include any previous discounts, aside from our sibling discount.

Do you have a camp nurse?
We have EMT’s and certified athletic trainers. Please see our “Leadership” section for details.

Are programs Co-Ed?
Most programs are co-ed. Please see our individual program pages for details.

How are campers grouped?
For sport specific programs (soccer, basketball, baseball, etc.), campers are grouped by age and ability. For our popular multi-sport program, campers will be grouped mainly by age/grade.

Registered campers must bring their own lunch to our Selden camp location. Please pack lunch in a cooler type bag, as there is no refrigeration for lunches. All campers will eat in either a classroom or cafeteria on campus.

There are plenty of drinking water fountains throughout campus, in addition to vending machines should your camper wish to purchase a drink during the day.

We are committed to being a 'nut-free' camp, so please make every effort to avoid packing foods that include nut products.

Each day, all programs will have 45 minutes to an hour to cool off and chill out in our designated “Waterpark” and “Game Tent” areas. Campers taking part in our entertaining waterpark activities will change in separate locker rooms for boys and girls and will be accompanied by multiple staff members to make sure they get in and out with no problems. Team members will assist campers when needed, and there are multiple bathroom and shower stalls for privacy.

The Waterpark features “THE BIG KAHUNA” – our inflatable Double Lane Waterslide that kids don’t want to leave and love sliding down over and over again! In addition, we have another "Big Wave" Waterslide, an inflatable Double Lane Slip’n’Slide, and Sprinklers that allow the campers too cool-off and chill-out each day.  We also bring in other inflatables over the summer for additional fun; water slides, obstacle courses, bounch houses.

Our Game Tent area features a GaGa Pit, Ping Pong Tables, Nok Hockey Tables, Bag Toss, Kan Jam, Giant Jenga, Giant Connect 4, Giant Checkers, a Nukem Court and more! We’re always adding new games year-after-year and even break out the inflatable tug-o-war and other fun inflatables throughout that summer.
