Our Director:

Shannon Cavanaugh

Hi there! My name is Shannon Cavanaugh, and I am thrilled to be returning to Future Stars camp this summer as the STEAM instructor for the second year in a row. I have years of experience working with children and teaching in general, and I can't wait to bring my expertise to the campers this summer.

Working with children has always been a passion of mine, and as the STEAM instructor, I am excited to help campers explore the world of science, technology, engineering, art, and math in a fun and engaging way. I believe that learning should always be fun, and I am dedicated to creating an educational environment that is both challenging and enjoyable.

Whether we are building robots, designing video games, or exploring the science of cooking, I am confident that we will have a blast while learning new skills and concepts. Overall, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to inspire and educate the next   generation of STEAM enthusiasts!

CORE STEAM Subjects:

Coding & Game Design with Scratch
Learn how to create old-school and new-school 2D Video Games! After being shown how to create a few simple games, each camper will be able to create their own originals. Using code and loops to create games requires one to think outside the box. This will give campers a glimpse into how complicated commercial games are to develop.

Stop Motion Animation & Filmmaking
Experience the amazing world of Stop Motion Animation and Real Action Filmmaking! Stop motion is an interesting art and labor of love - By creating a scene and moving objects and characters slightly between each photo, one combines the photos to make moving images, a movie! Using Lego, puppets, and basically anything else, campers will create original stories told through stop motion. Campers will also learn how television and movie production works through real action filmmaking. It takes a team to create a film and campers will experience first hand the steps and teamwork required to make a parody commercial, music video, news broadcast and short film.

Coding & Game Design with Scratch
These workshops introduce campers to coding concepts, the fundamentals of video game design, and digital worldbuilding. Through project-based instruction using the Scratch coding language, campers will learn about events, loops, variables, and other core coding concepts. In addition to using Scratch to build games, they will also use the Bloxels and Minecraft EDU platforms. These tools will help campers gain an understanding of 3D environments and how to build robust games that include heroes, enemies, levels, power-ups, hazards, and more. Most importantly, campers will have fun while building foundations in complex topics!

Esports with Minecraft
This Esports class is focused on building life skills through playing the cooperative games that kids already love. Players meet with their team to practice or compete against another team under the careful guidance of an Esports coach. The class uses platforms that campers are familiar with, such as Minecraft, to facilitate fun, friendly games. Practices focus on strategy, team building, communication, and sportsmanship.

Circuit Adventures
Circuits are closed loops through which electrons, also known as electricity, travels. Circuits are used in devices all around us, from light switches to toasters to computers, and even cars! Campers are guided through the specific elements of circuits while developing an understanding of key electricity concepts, such as voltage, resistors, batteries and more. Create your own paper circuit art and robot and watch your creation come to life with electricity!

3D Design & Printing with TinkerCAD
Experience a still-emerging technology, 3D Printing! It all starts with a design to print, we learn how to use a Computer Aided Design program called TinkerCAD. TinkerCAD is the little sibling to AutoCAD, a program used by professional engineers and architects. Start by creating a house, a future home to lunar dwellings. Then work to master 3D design skills by creating a product, toy or model and much more!

Exploring their creativity students produce anything from recreations of their favorite droid to a stand for their tablet, whatever their minds can come up with!

 LEGO Robotics and Engineering
See your children grow and shine through an introductory robotics and coding course from LEGO. Campers will take their background knowledge of STEM and put it into practice as they work in teams to design and build robots using Lego robotics kits. They will use their STEM skills combined with critical thinking to work as a team to build robots and compete in exciting, mission-based games. Along with building, children will also practice their coding skills as they program their robots to accomplish practical goals. Campers will apply themselves in engaging activities and missions while gaining productive learning habits, confidence, and teamwork skills along the way.

Junior Builders
Junior Builders challenges campers to build models of bridges, planes, boats and more! Campers learn about building materials, such as cardboard, Legos, up-cycling materials and how to creatively construct their projects using design based thinking. How much weight can your boat hold before sinking? How tall can your building grow? Inspire, learn and create with this hands-on STEAM projects!

Design & Engineering
Campers explore how design and engineering are all around us, everything that is human made is designed and engineered… How does one go about designing products, buildings, vehicles and more? When does engineering become important, and what role does it play?

Campers will use various methods to explore and answer these questions, including 3d design and printing, model building, structural testing and more! Campers love our “shake table” that re-creates earthquakes to study how changes in engineering can make the building stay put!

CHARACTER

Safety is first for a reason. Ingrained in everything we do, safety paves the way for our campers to thrive in a healthy environment.
Teamwork challenges our campers to collaborate thoughtfully and teaches us that, “we are not on a team because we work together, we are on a team because we respect, trust, and care for one another.”
Attitude is everything, our coaches discuss both the good and the bad of attitudes; guiding campers to consider the power of an open and growth-oriented mind.
Responsibility fosters a supportive and thriving community, which takes effort from every single member. We encourage every camper to take ownership of their actions, just as they do their belongings.
Sportsmanship is more than just a handshake at the end of a game. We encourage our campers to honor differences and celebrate similarities of everyone in our community, all the while playing hard and playing fair.

What does it mean to be a Future Star?

Our S.T.A.R.S. acronym tells our campers and parents of what it means to be a part of the Future Stars Southampton family. We aim to help our campers understand the value and interconnectedness of Safety, Teamwork, Attitude, Responsibility, and Sportsmanship. Through fun and engaging activities each day of every camp week, our staff of professional coaches/educators emphasizes one of these values, discussing its importance and encouraging campers to recognize the power they hold to contribute positively to a community or a team. Whether on the baseball field, in a chess match, or on a paddle board, we strive to equip every camper with the tools to be a Future Star for any community they may be a part of!
